Newborn infants cared for in incubators struggle with sleep, stress and emotions. Babies given skin to skin contact with their mothers do not have the same issues. It supports 'kangaroo care' where babies are kept covered and close to mothers.
This is hardly new. There is lots of evidence that babies that don't form good attachments with parents are affected throughout their life. Nowadays parents are encouraged to have lots of close physical contact with incubated babies to enable that bond.
My prem twins are now nearly 4 and still don’t sleep through. But not sure it’s anything to do with incubators as their dad was the same and he was full term.
