A man who stabbed the manager of a Ballymena hostel 55 times was today informed he will spend a minimum of 20 years in jail for the “brutal” murder.
As relatives of Mr Shah sat in the public gallery of Belfast Crown Court, Judge Smyth paid tribute to him and spoke of the loss his death has had on his loved ones. She said Mr Shah’s “repeated screams” can be heard along with him offering money to Lenaghan in return for his life. The wounded man ran back to the hostel shouting ‘the old man has been stabbed’ and the emergency services were called.
When arrested for murder, Lenaghan asked ‘is he dead?’ and when told this was the case, he replied ‘f*****g good’. He was overheard by Mr Shah’s daughter shouting ‘happy days’. The deceased man’s daughter spoke of her loss, grief and depression since her father’s death and the “searing pain” of his absence. Mr Shah’s son spoke of the difficulties he experienced with the court proceedings and the lack of remorse on Lenaghan’s part.
