From batting collapses to Steve Smith's brilliance, the reasons behind England's Ashes failure - and could we have predicted it all along?

Ashes highlights: England battle but Australia retain the urnBy winning at Old Trafford, they went 2-1 up with one match to play to ensure at least a drawn series, which is all the holders require to retain the urn.

Not since Neighbours arrived on TV screens has something Australian put together a greater body of work in the UK. To be without your all-time leading wicket-taker, one of the greatest swing bowlers to have ever played the game, when trying to dislodge the planet's best batsman is like a golfer trying to play Augusta with only half of his clubs in the bag.

It potentially shouldn't have been a problem here - Australia's batting, bar Smith, has been similarly shaky. It can be argued that England have been outplayed in three Tests and were the better side in the other . At Old Trafford, Australia were 224-5 on a placid pitch when Smith was joined by captain Tim Paine. In a stand of 145 that took control of the Test, Paine was dropped twice and Smith, who went on to make 211, was caught off a Jack Leach no-ball on 118.It has been coming...

They don’t have Smith, first of all!

Where not? From captaincy to batting to fielding, almost everywhere, probably bowling is rather winner here. Without Stokes’s heroism, it would have been embarrassing, but you can’t expect to win every match on one individual’s shoulders.

We don’t have 11 men called Ben Stokes.

The day Ian Botham stopped playing

They turned up 😂😂😂

When was it ever right?

Yeah OK so they won. But it was only because they played better than England!

A dearth of quality...

Failure to pick batsmen who can stay awake for more than 20 minutes.

Leaving balls on bounce on a 5th day wicket that has shown inconsistent bounce is a start.

Der they lost

BREXIT

They scored more runs and hit our wickets quicker.

Australia batted better, bowled better, fielded better, just better than us, hope this helps with your question,😃

Simple they were rubbish

They got beat that will do it.

in two words where it went wrong for England in the ashes STEVE SMITH the man is a genius

😥

Australia were better.

England picking wrong players yet again some hang on in when not good enough need to be ruthless and we appear clueless when it's not going our way

They weren't the best team on the day.

Lack of test batting skill and the inability to bowl Steve Smith out are the obvious reasons

Simple, they played better...

We need a People’s Game to be sure the players did understand the rules of the game

It didn't go wrong . Aussies won get over yourself move on and try harder next time .

Why are we in a gobsmaking mess cause generally people guilty of significant cheating therefore fraudulent behaviour been so easily forgiven by everyone? We have lost our moral compass

Where did it go wrong on the big green bit I think

They got best well and truly.

Simple, you let Steve Smith into the country, but it’s poor behaviour from the so called fans when he gets constantly booed, he makes a double century and gets booed, absolutely shocking, if it was role reversal the Engerlund media would be calling the Aussie support, thugs.

Needed some sand paper on the ball. We were crap but there best player shouldn’t be playing

I think Steve Smith may have had something to do with it. Lol.

They forgot to include Sam Curran

Not good enough

Neglect of red ball cricket in favour of making England no1 one day team

Where did it go wrong? It didn't go wrong, they were simply better than us. We live in a country where children aren't allowed to be competitive and there are no losers. Get used to us struggling to compete against the best as adults

2 things for me. Steve Smith is the obvious one & playing Jimmy Anderson when he was clearly not match fit at Edgbaston. Thst was a risk too far & we laid for it.

Batting technique for test cricket and Anderson being unfit

Archer didnt got any wickt in first innings..

The amount of noise in the press a few weeks' ago, I thought they had won the series.👊

SMITH.

Steve Smith and our woeful batting average.

We were shite

On day 1

They didn’t get enough runs.

We turned up.......

simple not bloody good enough

We would have won if Smith hadn’t turned up 🤷‍♀️

We didn’t ban sand paper cheats for long enough

Australia getting the ball changed to take key wickets in the first and this last test didn't exactly help.

Two reasons spring to mind: 1. Australia batted better and 2. They bowled better as well!

AnnaPrictor You took money from Soros to stop brexit naughty ,it was the boss names gone to pm

Not good enough with the bat as usual

They couldn't get Steve Smith out... Not rocket science you know!

The batting line up was so unbalanced and no red ball cricket for weeks so how on earth can players be picked on form or sort their problems out by playing in the championship..

Only 1 answer to that Steve Smith - simple as that - take his run score away and it would be a different result

Worst captaincy by root66 and inclusion of 'one season' successful top batsmen by the ECB_cricket Selectors!

Awful batting line up, lack of consistency, poor dismissals, lack of leadership from the skipper

Just not good enough . Simple .

Ask Geoffrey.

Silly question.

No Anderson for England.

They were shite. Happy to help.

Several players failing to make double figures each time they batted is my guess

No Smith in the side
