Mary Berry’s Ultimate Christmas, review, BBC One: An early Christmas dinner? What’s not to like
Some may have been disappointed by this almost Pooterish observation, but for those of us who appreciate Dame Mary for her practical, no-fluff style of cookery programme, it was the sort of advice we had tuned in for: tips gleaned over a lifetime as a food editor and teacher, delivered with clarity and economy and only the occasional “truly scrumptious” as she tasted the end product.
As a cheapskate recipe slave myself, one who likes to emulate ideas from TV cookery shows without buying the accompanying cookbook, I’m often frustrated by the way in which vital measurements are omitted on cookery shows. None of that nonsense with Mary Berry – every gram of parmesan and litre of stock was spelled out, along with the necessary oven temperatures and timings.
The question was, however, by airing the show just six days before the big event, had the BBC left the broadcast too late for it to be of practical use? After all, Channel 4’swent out in early December, and surely most people have already planned their Christmas meals by now.
