With Steve Barclay refusing to discuss pay, it is highly likely the discussions will not avert disruption.

Unions representing striking ambulance drivers will attend 11th-hour talks convened by Health Secretary Steve Barclay but the discussions are unlikely to avert the action.

The Health Secretary is understood to hold concerns over whether all emergency calls will be covered, but unions said there would be “no strikes at all if ministers would only talk to unions and improve NHS pay”. “But he remains concerned that some union officials still haven’t confirmed that they will cover all emergency calls in their talks with trusts. Some are even suggesting they could answer calls from picket lines, which would increase delays,” they said.

Taxi drivers, military personnel and police officers could be called into cover calls relating to the less serious remaining two categories under contingency plans.

Steve Barclay 'Holding UK To Ransom' By Refusing To Discuss Nurses' Pay, Claims UnionA department of health source told HuffPost UK: 'The government’s position on pay is unchanged - the country cannot afford to meet the unions’ inflation-busting demands.' They could afford the £30+ billion in dodgy Covid contracts for their Tory mates. The system has to change from the top down, no more dubious expenses for MPs, no more subsidised food and booze in Westminster, get rid of the very expensive cars at government disposal, no more non dom status and stop the tax avoiding billions being shifted offshore kerching The government have found out refusing to discuss works, no matter if its lockdown party's, PPE fast track or NHS funding. Time passing lessens the pressure on them and things slide. It won't work with this one hopefully

Health Secretary Steve Barclay writes to unions for fresh strike talks - but still won't move on payHe also calls on nurses and ambulance staff to 'honour commitments' over patient safety when they strike this week. The old Tory tricks of turning the public against the strikers no longer work. Probably won’t turn up in the post until after Xmas So it's a pointless gesture, made for no other reason than to allow the Tories to say they're trying to engage with the unions, when in fact they aren't engaging at all.

'Max the miracle dog' helps fund Great North Air Ambulance vehicleThe springer spaniel, who died in April, helped raise £120,000 for an air ambulance SUV. Can someone explain to me why successive governments do not supply the comparatively TINY amounts of money needed to find Air Ambulance and the RNLI? NO WAY these should be reliant on charity. Awwww 🥰
