Business owners in the city centre worry the plans will have a negative impact on trade when the evening fee for motorists comes into force in 2026, following consultation.

Glasgow City Council plans to charge for parking between 6pm and 10pm have raised fears from local businesses over a reduced footfall and potential job losses - with almost 100 per cent saying it'll hit them hard.

Now, a survey conducted by the Federation of Small Businesses and the Scottish Hospitality Group - completed by 205 businesses - has found that 97 per cent of employers, who employ over 8,300 people in total, believe the charges would 'hurt their business'.READ MORE: Abandoned Glasgow house a world away from 'eyesore' it once was after dramatic renovation

Development manager for Glasgow, Hisashi Kuboyama said: “The survey shows that Glasgow’s business community is extremely concerned about the Glasgow City Council’s proposed parking restrictions. Stephen Montgomery, Director of the Scottish Hospitality Group said: "The businesses of Glasgow have made their concerns very clear in this survey, but this is more than just about business, it is about the people who make Glasgow, who have already been hit with an LEZ policy, and now look to be hit again.

A council spokesman said: "Changes to pay and display hours in parking zones were agreed as part of a budget that required to find £107m worth savings from council services over the next three years.“The budget has sought to target poverty and invest in support for communities with Council Tax frozen for the next year.

“A significant majority of people already come into the city centre by public transport and other forms of sustainable transport.
