As the UK faces its second Tory leadership contest this year, calls for a general election are growing. After Liz Truss managed just 44 days in the top job before announcing her resignation, and Boris Johnson was forced out by his own party after one scandal too many in July earlier this year, Brits will soon find out who the third person to take on the role this year will be.
How is an early general election called? The government is allowed to call an early general election if it so desires. So, if the next prime minister decided an election was necessary, they would be able to request the dissolution of Parliament with the King and take the country to the polls. Previously, members of the House of Commons would have to vote on it, but that is no longer necessary.
Can Labour force a general election? It's no wonder Labour want a general election given their position in the polls. Labour’s average opinion poll lead over the Conservatives has grown from eight percentage points to 33 in the four weeks since Kwasi Kwarteng’s mini-budget. The Labour leader cannot force an early general election in the way the prime minister can. Sir Keir would need to propose a motion of no confidence in the PM, triggering a Commons vote. But he would need the backing of a large proportion of the Tory party to be able to make it happen - again, an unlikely scenario.
If the government loses a confidence motion, the King could invite somebody else to form a government, if they would be able to pass a confidence vote in the Commons - but that is unlikely and hasn't happened for almost 100 years. Mr Johnson's supporters have been urging him to mount an extraordinary political comeback less than four months after he was forced out of Downing Street by his own MPs. Cabinet ministers Jacob Rees-Mogg, Simon Clarke and Alok Sharma are among the high-profile Tory figures declaring their support.
