Emma Raducanu has spoken about the pressure to be continually great, but perfection is over-rated

My son is nine and an obsessive cricketer, mainly bowling leg spin – like Shane. When I am feeling neurotic I see in my mind’s eye his whole youth tossed on a pyre of googlies, flippers and drift. But what if he hits 19 and his rotator cuff goes, or he just plain burns out? What then?

The culture that sprang up in the 90s of more training, more commitment, more focus and a determination to sit in the top spot for as long as possible, politician-like, then co-mingled with the horrible nude-lipstick tyranny of the Instagram age. But this is to deny, or to be unforgivably ignorant of, the sacrifices that all sportspeople must make to get anywhere near the top. Time spent practicing and training is so often reduced to a video montage for evidence of “commitment”, when it is so much more of a drag than that. It is also to deny the significant factor of luck in any given game, at any given moment. It is to deny the fact that being great at sport means handing over your youth, your childhood.
