! Once suitable for something closer to Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s “Lost Speedways” show than hosting an actual race, one of NASCAR’s most historic venues has been revived thanks to a combination of factors including government COVID relief money and Earnhardt’s passion for the place.
Make no mistake: I’m still super pumped for the Clash and curious to see how it will compare to the first year. But the anticipation factor can’t be as high when we’ve already seen it once before. As mentioned for No. 3 above, we’re guessing the wall riding won’t be outlawed until it happens again somewhere. Well, this race would be the prime candidate for someone to try it.
Logano and his team had two weeks to work on their Phoenix car and come up with all the strategy they needed for the title race. Whoever wins this year’s Vegas playoff race could have a similar experience, so it will be one that has an added emphasis for both teams and fans.I still don’t love seeing the prestige of the Southern 500 itself get overshadowed as the playoff opener, but it sure doesn’t negatively impact the quality of the racing.
jeff_gluck I went to 2-3 races a year for a decade or so. Haven’t been to one in years. Tickets are overpriced. Rooms are overpriced. Venues are relatively empty. Not much anticipation for anything that’s not in Vegas.
