Alcoholism ruined my mum: that's why Mother's Day has always been so hard

That very much depends on the mother. Even if mine weren’t long gone – she was destroyed by alcoholism at the age of 50 – no card could capture the complex legacy of our relationship.

My mother was selfish and violent alcoholic, who ruined my life, and every interaction I have ever had with females. I am forty-six, a parent myself, and completely teetotal. I have ensured that none of my upbringing has been passed onto my daughters.
