Alabama Rep. Neil Rafferty speaks during a debate on transgender bills during the legislative session in the House chamber at the Alabama Statehouse in Montgomery, Ala., Thursday, April 7, 2022.Updated: April 7, 2022 11:58 PM EDT | Originally published: April 7, 2022 4:33 PM EDT
The House of Representatives voted 66-28, largely along party lines, to grant final approval to legislation that would make it a felony for a doctor to prescribe puberty blockers or hormones to aid in the gender transition of anyone under age 19. Violations would be punishable by up to 10 years in prison. The bill also would prohibit gender transition surgeries, although doctors told lawmakers those are generally not done on minors.
Rep. Neil Rafferty, the only openly gay member of the Alabama Legislature, appeared to struggle to maintain composure as lawmakers headed to the vote. “You’re saying this is about children. It’s not. What it is about is scoring political points and using those children as collateral damage,” England said.
White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki told reporters Thursday that the U.S. Department of Justice has warned states such laws and policies may violate the Constitution and federal law.
👏👏👏👏👏
REALIZE IT NOW! It's never been about abortion, CRT, immigration, voter fraud, sexual/gender identity, banning books, vaccines, mask or any other excuse; it's always been about masking their sickness for White supremacy&privilege by using dog whistles. STOP THE HATE, VOTE BLUE!
Great !!! ALL Children should be protected by law untIl they reach adulthood.
They call it 'gender-affirming' as if the brutal tactics they use actually affirm anything besides the willing abuse of the child by those they trust.
Just look between your legs to find out what gender you are, and act accordingly!
Next they will target young girls that are using birth control. It is very common for girls 16 and up to be on birth control. Many use birth control for irregular painful periods but that won't matter to the GOP.
Gender affirming or gender altering?
I am a mother and I'm just old school about things. There was an age for dating, make-up, clothing, shoes, dances, curfews... I think it is a maturity thing. Limits have to be set. Not just for this issue of youth but for all issues concerning our youth.
Of course they are: they have to distract voters away from their high poverty rates and violent crime running rampant. By most measures of well-being and success Alabama is at the bottom. They are a social septic tank.
These southern states sure are, I say, sure are darn tootin’ scared as a cricket in a spider’s web about this gay thing, I do believe.
Like this, the Western Liberalism is going to waste. An inconsistent and confused ideological system with no real deal more than constantly finding something and/or someone to be free from and not seek freedom for. This is as shity as it gets. Weak and evil system that must go.
I've worked with some transgendered youth and these bills are only hurting them. There are so many steps multiple physicians take to treat these patients. If only lawmakers could understand that, but instead make them a target for violence.
Of course they did. After all, what does anyone expect from a State that still glorifies their humiliating loss of the Civil War and has been a hotbed for white supremacy and racism for almost 2 centuries? Thank God that there's still good people there that will work to reverse
No drugs and surgeries for youths under 18 years old. Even gay men should easily understand.
why?
Patient. Parent. Doctor. NOBODY else has a say in a human’s medical choices. This is just overt bigotry.
