Airdrie legend Gallagher opens up on exit after not meeting McCabe's 'metrics'

Calum Gallagher admits he had to leave Airdrie to prolong his career and revealed he fell out of favour with Diamonds boss Rhys McCabe because he wasn’t meeting certain ‘metrics’.

However, all good things must come to an end and this season ‘Gal’ found himself warming the bench more than finding the back of the net, so that has sparked his decision to call time on his stint in Monklands. “I had a chat with the manager and the owners at Airdrie. They were upset at the prospect of me going but they understood my decision.

“I am not ready to retire anytime soon. Being part-time as well, the game time aspect of it becomes such a huge percentage of your time on the pitch compared to the full-time guys who train every day. In the 2022/23 campaign, Gallagher bagged 23 goals in 45 games in all competitions as Airdrie won promotion from League One through the Championship play-offs.
