Airdrie strengthened their grip on the last play-off spot in the Championship after a convincing win over fellow promotion hopefuls Morton.
The result also dealt a big blow to Dougie Imrie's Morton, who have now lost six out of their last seven in all competitions. Morton went looking for the equaliser and in the 10th minute Jack Bearne caught a strike sweetly on the edge of the box. Thankfully for Airdrie, a sea of players in Diamonds jerseys were in the way to get in its path and turn it behind.
And on the half-hour mark the hosts' goalkeeper was on top form to deny Cameron Blues one-on-one. The rebound fell into the path of Robbie Crawford and Kanayo Megwa was on hand to make a vital block.Airdrie soaked up that spell of pressure and when Dean McMaster's perfectly weighted pass slipped in McGill to fire at goal, it took a good stop from the outstretched leg of Mullen at his near post to prevent the hosts adding a third after 39 minutes.
Morton did pull one back in 73 minutes when Jai Quitongo burst down the right and picked out fellow substitute Michael Garrity. He enjoyed a bit of good fortune to score after his initial effort hit the post and then hit back off him, before finding its way into the net.
