An ex-soldier has been given a suspended sentence for killing an unarmed man at an Army checkpoint in Northern Ireland 35 years ago.He was killed by a bullet which ricocheted off the road and hit him in the back at a County Tyrone checkpoint.Mr McAnespie was walking through checkpoint in the village of Aughnacloy on his way to attend a Gaelic football match when the fatal shot was fired.
Holden claimed his hands were wet at the time and his finger slipped on the trigger of his machine gun, discharging three shots Convicting him, he said he considered the defendant "criminally culpable" of gross negligence manslaughter, beyond any reasonable doubt.

Given the pardon of members of IRA death squads the sentence is appropriate. The authorities should now release intelligence held on all historical killings, this would not be a trial but would offer solace to relatives and insight into the roles played by prominent Republicans.

There was never going to be justice when the PPS brought a manslaughter charge by gross negligence, instead of murder for shooting Aidan in the back. This sentence has no doubt compounded the families sense of injustice.
If this was the other way round, the person would have gotten life in jail. but the solider gets a telling off.

British soldier's cold blooded murderer of an Irish citizen gets him a slap on the wrist as punishment for being a naughty boy. So no change there then. He would have had the same punishment in the 18th century.
