Drivers should not be judged on age, says Pedro de la Rosa - who reckons it cost him a McLaren F1 seat in 2008 ⬇️

Nyck de Vries will join the F1 grid full-time in 2023 at the age of 28 with AlphaTauri after impressing in a one-off appearance for Williams at Monza this year.

The Spaniard said he had spoken with a Formula 3 driver who was already writing off his chances of reaching F1 because he thought he was too old at 20 - something the Spaniard felt was wrong. “When I’ve been in these meetings and they tell you this, there’s nothing worse than that. They can tell you we think the other driver is faster than you, OK. But the age tag is terrible.Pedro de la Rosa, McLaren MP4/21-Mercedes-Benz

"Maybe it was not that clear then, but what they were telling me, it was [a possibility], yes,” de la Rosa said. “And if you look back at some pictures, I even cut my hair very short! It didn’t work…

Nope what cost him the drive was his pace

I understand how he feels, but it's just a fact that as we age our reflexes and timing go. It happens to us all, and the hardest part is saying to yourself, 'My time is done, time to move on to the next chapter in my life.' Here is a classic example.

Oh yeah. 'Age.' That's what did him in. Mhmm. Certainly couldn't be poor performance in 2006 and oh yeah, ALL OF SPYGATE REVOLVING AROUND HIM

I doubt McLaren ever really considered Pedro for that seat given his pretty average career to that point

He was a solid and reliable performer in mid-2006 when he was called up to replace JPM. I think had he got the drive alongside Lewis in 2008, McLaren might have won that year's constructors title.

No the greatest driver of his era joined the team.... whose going to win that seat, nothing to do with age!
