If a few businessmen can claim £100bn of public money for a dud project, how can the prime minister refuse a new hospital or school, asks Guardian columnist Simon Jenkins

Britain’s greatest white elephant, HS2, was always a dud railway. It has grazed for 10 years on the Treasury lawn, and has now has been told it can stay, more dud than ever. It was symbolic this week that Boris Johnson launched HS2 not in the north but in a giant patch of Birmingham mud. Next to him stood his chancellor, Sajid Javid. They already looked like executioner and victim. Both seemed to know their “spine of the north” was as doomed as their relationship.

Simon Jenkins appears to have the wrong end of this HS2 stick. Evidence shows how the North and the whole of the UK will benefit. (Yes and NI) the article is in my very humble view opportunistic and poor journalism- very rare for the Guardian.

Chinese infra developers will run up against cost & time delays of UK legal framework. Either have underestimated time & costs or will expect to drive over democratic & legal protections. This is not TakeBackControl. People did not vote out of EU to hand to Chinese autocrats

Do you understand how a investments works?

HS2 isn't being paid for with public money....it's being raised by the in investors

It’s the difference between the extra on your mortgage for extending your house or upping your weekly food bill. Big capital projects can pay for themselves over time but you aren’t getting that food money back.

The TakeBackControl plan seems to be hand infrastructure to authoritarian regime. China’s Communist party 5g, nuclear energy & now HS2 rail. I am NOT ok with this at all: we’re handing huge soft power advantage to a regime that has come closer than any to a Big Brother society

People are finally starting to realise there's money for anything tories want... Just not for poor people or public services.

UK got so low to borrow technology from Far East.African strongmen’s can now loudly say even the Uk imports not only goods but also infrastructure from Far East.

Nonsense! He can say there's no money, because it has all gone into financing HS2.

For once, I agree entirely with a Guardian article.

And didn’t Daddy get a nice payout for his house which was in the way of HS2. I think it should be renamed the BorisBirminghamTrain so no-one can forget who ‘owns’ it. BrexitJohnson

I don’t always agree with Simon Jenkins but this is blistering (and he is always worth reading.)

It would seem that Simon has gone Woke. The impact assessment that was not assessed by Simon.

Your “monomaniac” writer is now a public joke

Back in the early 90s there was a depot built not far from Machester Piccadilly station for Eurostar. It was so exciting to think one day we could go from Manchester or Crewe to Paris for the day. Duh!!

But, and there's always a but, Johnson talks shit... and generally doesn't care when he's called out on it, so he will continue to say there's no money and FU to the lot of us.

There will be no money for anything important like social care. Although if he did really care about the country this is the legacy he could leave behind.

...and then within 24 hours demanded a 5% cost saving from every department via his pet poodle.

Well, there is no money now. Johnson has just pissed up all on a train set. 😀

He'll cancel it again, just you watch

Racist Nazi British voters should have thought about it before voting for this Joker.

Just like Keynes in the Economic Consequences of the Peace (1920). How did you ever let them fool you into thinking they didn't have money lol
