Up to half a million people will spill out of Afghanistan in the coming months as refugees, seeking shelter from the Taliban takeover of their country. But where will they go, and how will they get to the destinations they will strive to reach? 👉

Up to half a million people will spill out of Afghanistan in the coming months as refugees, seeking shelter from the Taliban takeover of their country, according to the United Nations High Commission for Refugees.

Until recently, the border was highly porous, and for decades, Afghans with tribal or commercial connections passed into and out of Pakistan, largely ignoring the fact they were in two separate countries.Queues at Torkham crossing A study by Verso Consulting in March, in conjunction with UK Aid, said the number of motorable crossing points varies enormously, from as many as 18 to as few as eight, with many open only inconsistently.

But even if the crossing points are open, or there are gaps in the fence, getting there would be a major challenge as much of the border region is either in high, mountainous terrain, where the weather can be unpredictable, or surrounded by hundreds of miles of desert.Common routes for those fleeing include heading into western Pakistan, before going onwards from there into Iran.

No mass exodus of people to Iran has been observed yet, but the UN refugee agency noted that an increase in numbers is expected. Iran has set up camps at three places along the border to accommodate incoming refugees, but an Iranian interior official said that these people were expected"to return when the situation improves" in Afghanistan. The Turkmenistan border cuts across an expanse of arid scrub and grassland, an environment little more hospitable than the deserts further south.

Yet it is a bridge built by another nation that had its own long war in Afghanistan – the Soviet Union – that forms the crossing point with Uzbekistan. It is the place where several Afghan army members fled over the border on 14 August, abandoning their military vehicles on the bridge. At least five bridges crossing the Panj river act as official border points. A sixth crossing amounts to little more than a barge used to transport concrete and other industrial supplies across the water.

The UK has committed £20m in aid to help countries predicted to experience a significant increase in refugees with processing new arrivals and providing essential services and supplies.
