The Dons board has made significant progress in their search to appoint Barry Robson’s permanent successor

and are closing in on their man. Pittodrie chiefs held an initial run of interviews with domestic and European candidates last week and those have been followed up in recent days.

Chairman Dave Cormack and his directors had previously indicated they want to make an appointment in this international break – and they look bang on course to do so. German football consultancy group BPTC, who recently held an internal review into the club, have been heavily involved in the process. The shortlist has been whittled down – but Swedish manager Jimmy Thelin is now off it. Thelin did interest Aberdeen although he is no longer in the running and will remain at Elfsborg.

Neil Warnock was brought in as interim manager but he left after the Scottish Cup win over Kilmarnock. The experienced manager’s time at Pittodrie saw him fail to win a league game. First-team Peter Leven has since been put in charge of the first-team and led them to an important win over Motherwell last time out. That was a crucial three points but the Reds still remain just three points off the relegation play-off spot.
