However, he has been able to turn his life around thanks to a scheme started by a colleague at the rail firm. "Then over the next couple of weeks, it just seemed every other passenger was somebody giving me grief, didn't want to buy a ticket, wanted to pay for nothing and all that sort of thing.

I agree keep guards, passengers need some protection at times, or help these days. It’s not a nice world can’t rely on others coming to your aide. Also more BTP would be nice .
If he had of bothered to learn some sort of self defence they it wouldn't be so much of an issue.
be thankful it wasn't northeastern, the sooner we take back full control of all our services the better, alas with this shower of piggy privateers firmly in charge we have a fight on our hands-power to the people!!

Guards on the trains at night are needed but hey nobody cares anymore why are you expecting people to police others? The ticket/ Guard provides a vital service to all on board the train its the jeopardy you see that works...
