Letters: Writing from Italy, Marika McGregor is disappointed that the UK lockdown is being seen as ‘draconian’ and predicts that people will soon be hiding indoors

I have sympathy for police forces who have been under fire for what some see as overzealous interpretations of the lockdown rules. Covid-19 is so contagious that I believe an all-or-nothing crackdown is the only one that works, and I am disappointed that the media continue to use words like “draconian” .

(1) the UK curve is lower than Italy's,. (2) it's wayyyyy too early to talk about lessons.

Well that really worked well in Italy, didn’t it?

This is not Italy

But for how long! We are already building up gigantic economic debts. At some point pragmatic decisions will have to be made. Risk versus necessity. For 80-90% there is no risk - so they say! And I'm in the lower high risk group!! Doesn't stop my brain from working though.

Cut the curve, not just flatten it! Survivors may get permanent lung damage. Treat everyone outside like they have the virus and think what you can do to minimize exposure. Don’t risk the lives of others especially those of medical workers even if you don’t cherish your life!

Yet if this was the case we'd see the hospitals full now.
