Grab a drink and snuggle up before a cosy fire

What's better than coming in from the cold to find a roaring fire? The smell, the crackle... there's something hypnotising about watching the flames jumping up and down.

We've rounded up some of the warmest spots with open fires and log burners across the county where you can enjoy a tipple or a bite to eat - and they are plentiful, from city centre pubs to rural inns.Unicorn's Head The idyllic country pub, just down the road from Langar Hall, has recently reopened after a takeover. The ancient building, dating back to 1717, boasts not one but three fires dotted around the bar.

Increased opening hours are currently trialled over the next month so there's even more opportunity for a burger, fish and chips or a beef and ale pie. The coffee mornings are also back, Monday to Friday, from 10am, with free tea and coffee refills, and tasty bakes that can be enjoyed by the wood-burning fire.

You have to be quick to snap up the two big leather armchairs in front of the fire, which is so warm that you really won't want to vacate. It's the perfect spot to veg after a big Sunday roast... be careful you don't nod off.Cross Keys The massive beer garden, packed out on summer days, now lies dormant as pub-goers prefer to lounge on the plush Chesterfield sofas and relax in front of the country pub's open fires and log burners.
