June has seen women break records and shake up the world.

Named on 5 June, this summer New Zealand weightlifter Laurel Hubbard is set to make history as the first transgender athlete to compete at the Olympics. Taking place in Tokyo, Hubbard will compete in the women’s super heavyweight category.The first woman to feature as the face of the Royal Bank of Scotland’s £50 note, Flora Stevenson, was chosen on 26 June as a result of her efforts to help children from poorer families get an education in the Victorian era.

Debbie Hewitt has been named as the first woman to chair the English Football Association in its 157-year history. Announced on 8 June, she was unanimously selected by the FA board. She succeeds Greg Clarke, and will begin the role in January 2022.Ahead of the Tokyo Olympics, at the US trials on 27 June, Sydney McLaughlin shattered the women’s 400 metres hurdles world record by 0.26 seconds with a time of 51.90 seconds, 0.52 seconds ahead of competitor Dalilah Muhammad.
