In physics, the three-body problem is one of the most mind-boggling mathematical conundrums imaginable – calculating how three suns could orbit around each other.
A few of the scenes are genuinely powerful, none more than the opening sequence, where teenage Red Army soldiers are trying to force a university professor to renounce science, by beating him in front of a baying mob. But like a rocket disintegrating on lift-off, the show promptly hurtles off in several directions at once – with some parts ploughing straight into the ground.
Standing around computers, pointing to swirly patterns on the screen, they're all very worried about strange data from particle accelerator experiments. One professor is so aghast that she kills herself, though the problem looked to me as though her laptop was simply running an old-fashioned Microsoft screensaver.
Everything looks derivative and unconvincing. One minute it's a Chinese Doctor Zhivago, the next it's Doctor Who
