Police said some demonstrators had launched fireworks into crowds and towards officers.

A total of 29 people have been arrested after thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered in London’s Trafalgar Square demanding a ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war.

Other protesters chanted “from the river to the sea, Palestine will be free”, despite controversy around the slogan’s meaning. Police said “retrospective facial recognition” had been used to identify a 24-year-old man who was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated offence after he was filmed giving a speech.
