Northern Ireland has to hit a 70% recycling target by 2030

Bin day in Northern Ireland could soon be very different in a bid to tackle the throwaway culture that allows us to ‘take, make, use and waste’ materials that could go back into the economy.

He told us: “The people and businesses of Northern Ireland have made great progress so far - 51% of our waste is being recycled to date.”The Minister added: “There are many different proposals in this consultation... making it clear what can be recycled and standardising those arrangements - also looking at how we can deal with other issues such as packaging.“There’s lots of proposals, particularly in terms of businesses - we can up our game and ensure more businesses are recycling their waste.

She added: "It's not about how much, it's the quality. Landfill is the very last place it should go."Big Pointless Plastic photo contest winners show how our litter plagues NI nature Revisions are also proposed to household food waste collections, including flats, as in 2022/23 121,925 tonnes of biodegradable waste were sent to landfill in 2022/23 - accounting for 54.2% of the total waste landfilled.

Currently councils have to record and report on households waste and recycling but there is no similar requirement for non household waste and recycling data. They may also be required to segregate flexible plastic packaging for recycling no later than March 31, 2027.Waste collectors that co-collect dry recyclables from NHM premises while have to outline why and be open to assessment.

We import and extract 31.5 million tonnes of materials annually - the equivalent of 14 tonnes of material for every person in NI.
