Lanarkshire traffic police say they were called to the scene near the Gartcosh junction yesterday afternoon amid reports of a two car smash on the northbound carriageway.
The 62-year-old driver of one of the vehicles was rushed to Glasgow's Queen Elizabeth University Hospital along with his rear seat teenage passenger, who sadly could not be saved. The 42-year-old driver of the other car was uninjured and later arrested, although he was eventually released pending further enquiries.
The road was closed for several hours while investigations were carried out and reopened shortly before 9pm. Police have appealed to anyone who saw what happened or has dash cam footage of the incident to contact them immediately on 101.
