Over a period of generations, Glasgow employed the skills of countless architects, artisans and stone masons to create some of the finest edifices and marvels of engineering to be found anywhere in the Western World.

According to the Bank of England's inflation calculator, such a project would cost an estimated £200 million to build today. We reckon the true cost would have an extra zero, though!
Finnieston Crane As the prime symbol of Glasgow's shipbuilding heritage, the Finnieston Crane is arguably the city's most loved industrial landmark. The giant crane, which was used for loading cargo, particularly steam locomotives, was operational by 1932 and cost £69,000. Kelvingrove Museum Built for the 1901 Glasgow International Exhibition, the cost of the Kelvingrove Museum was reportedly not too hefty, coming in at just £74,000. That's just £7.2 million in 2023 - a snip compared to the £28 million refurbishment cost of the museum and art gallery in 2006.
People's Palace Work finally began on the £32,000 People's Palace in 1894 and the building was opened in 1898 to host 770,807 visitors in its first year alone.
