Ministers in England have said they are looking for a solution to the problems in social care. That has raised hope that next month's Budget could include measures to tackle what many describe as the crisis facing the sector.Social care - organised by councils - is a broad term that covers everything from children's social workers and fostering through to services for disabled adults and the care provided to people in their old age. But some have been affected more than others.
That's one of the reasons why we have heard so much about lengthening trolley waits and worsening waiting times in accident and emergency departments in recent months. This situation is understandable. To make savings, councils have started to ration care, particularly to the elderly, rather than younger adults with disabilities.
In Wales, the cost of help in the home for daily tasks such as washing and dressing is capped at £60 a week, in Northern Ireland it is provided free to the over-75s, and in Scotland personal care is free whether the individual is in their own home or a care home. The charity Age UK has been charting this. It estimates the number of those falling into this group hasThese are people who have pretty substantial needs. They cannot wash or dress themselves. They may struggle to go to the toilet. The stories they tell are heart-breaking.But it's not just individuals who have tales of woe. The companies providing the services - councils tend not to run them in-house - have started voicing concerns.
'But this upward trend in funding has tailed off in England over the past decade.' England is at the bottom of public spending, but any increase in its spending automatically invokes extra money for the rest of the UK via the Barnett Formula. Hence England remains at the bottom.
However annoying Surgeon is... in Scotland they seem to look after their elderly and the sick... free prescriptions..
There was a time when the family looked after their elders. Now families just dump their patents and grandparents on the state because they can't be bothered. Got to be a lot of Labour lovers hoping the Tories don't get back in.
Good old unbiased BBC...good timing as well.
I wonder why the social care system is collapsing, could it be a decade of Tory rule? Nah, let's just blame it on Corbyn! TurningPointUK SocialCare NHS Austerity GeneralElection2019
THEY DONT REALLY CARE.
The Tories. Ooh look BBC, this is very interesting
There's just too many people, especially in the UK. That's why everything here is sh1t. We had 55 million in the 70s, which was about the upper limit.
Since when has the BBC been an expert on social care, have they any first hand experience. Blairs gov had poor record too. What will cost the care community will be Labours hike of the minimum wage, the removal of zero hour contracts, and the four day week.
Vote Labour this Christmas
One problem that isn’t charted is that people are living longer
Neo liberals just want you to work then die.
Ten Years of Tory rule is why social care has collapsed...
Your tory puppet masters have caused it. Or have you been hiding under a rock the past decade? BBCBias
