Work cultures and work arrangements in Singapore must catch up with legislative moves that provide for more parental leave, said MP Yeo Wan Ling. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Sep 18), she made the point that policies to create allowances for working parents do not necessarily translate to those allowances being re

alised. Ms Yeo questioned the long-term sustainability of continually increasing paid and unpaid parental leave, for both workers and businesses.

She said it is timely to explore better options for work-life harmony, given that there are many types of familial duties - from parents with older kids, especially those with special needs, to those who also have to care for elderly parents or relatives. Flexible work arrangements, she said, are an important way for companies to reinvent their work cultures and attitudes towards caregiving leave as a whole.
