A proposed increase in paternity leave will come as much-needed support for working parents and is a welcome step towards “ungendering” workplaces, said NMP Usha Chandradas. Speaking in Parliament on Monday (Sep 18), she said it signals the Government’s broad commitment to adapting when traditionally held societa

l norms start to change. However, she said childless employees must be assured that they will not be “left to bear the brunt of work that has been left behind, with no ostensible reward”.

This would result in greater workplace tension and might reverse any positive steps taken towards ending maternity discrimination. Ms Chandradas also said that with Singapore’s rapidly ageing population, better support is needed for caregivers of the elderly. She urged the Government to consider paid eldercare leave entitlements for all, especially for the self-employed.
