New: You can now listen to articles.SINGAPORE: Cord blood banking is a commercial service provided by the private sector, and the government is limited in how it can intervene despite Cordlife 's mishandling of its storage tanks, Senior Minister of State for Health Janil Puthucheary said on Wednesday .

"There are limits to which the government can intervene, especially when it comes to issues of compensation and refunds," he said. Further investigations found that another 5,300 cord blood units were"non-viable". These units were stored in a tank and a dry shipper, which is intended for transport rather than long-term storage.In Parliament on Wednesday , Senior Minister of State for Health Janil Puthucheary said that the Government understands the anxiety and concerns among parents as a result of the lapses at cord blood bank Cordlife.

"We understand the need ... to expedite this and reassure people as fast as possible, but I think it's important that when the process is complete, that all who are involved have confidence in the findings from the process." Singapore Cord Blood Bank, Stemcord and Cryoviva are able and willing to help parents transfer their cord blood units from Cordlife if they wish to do so, though they each have specific conditions that must be met.
