The court ruled that Bern's failure to meet past greenhouse gas reduction targets violated some human rights.

Supporters and members of the Association of Senior Women for Climate Protection arriving for the ruling in the climate case in Strasbourg, France, on April 9.

Court president Siofra O’Leary said the Swiss government had violated the human right to a private and family life by failing to put in place sufficient domestic policies to tackle climate change. However, the Strasbourg-based court threw out two other similar cases, the first brought by six Portuguese youngsters against 32 European governments and another by a former French mayor against the French government.
