HONG KONG - Nine leaders behind Hong Kong’s Umbrella Movement of 2014 were found guilty on Tuesday of at least one offence that stemmed from their involvement in mass rallies centred on Hong Kong’s Central district that brought the city to a standstill for months.

Four of the remaining six accused, Civic Party legislator Tanya Chan, social welfare lawmaker Shiu Ka Chun, student leaders Tommy Cheung and Eason Chung, were each convicted of two charges - inciting others to cause public nuisance and inciting people to incite others to cause public nuisance, in the same vicinity.

All nine are out on bail. District Court Judge Johnny Chan, who didn’t hand down sentences at the morning session, said the court would reconvene at 2:30pm. Earlier, Chan told the media that he has “no regret for what we have done” even though the verdict will be “very dear” on each of their lives. He added that “what we did is according to our conscience”.

Hong Kong’s Justice Department brought charges under the rarely used colonial-era public nuisance category against the group leaders more than two years after the protests ended.
