SINGAPORE - A Briton who had taught in Singapore for more than 30 years was handed nine months' jail on Thursday after he pleaded guilty to consuming methamphetamine, also known as Ice.

The court heard that the Central Narcotics Bureau, acting on a tip-off, found drugs in Burge's home in Linden Drive near Eng Neo Avenue on Sept 20, 2018. In the course of investigations, Burge said that he consumed the drug because he enjoyed it, and would have continued consuming it if he had not been arrested.

Arguing for a probation report to be made, the defence put forward a medical report which found that Burge suffered from insomnia and adjustment order at the time. The report found that Burge no longer suffers from these disorders. Furthermore, Ms Wong argued that Burge's consumption of the drug was an attempt to"self-medicate", and"the law is clear that self medication is not an excuse or justification for taking drugs".
