Senator Cynthia Villar on Tuesday thanked President Duterte for defending the Rice Tariffication Law amid calls for its repeal.

Villar said she was grateful that the Chief Executive addressed complaints against the Republic Act No. 11203 which allowed the unimpeded entry of rice imports in the country in exchange of tariffs.“I thank the President for allaying the fears of our farmers and for reassuring them that Republic Act 11203 or the rice tariffication law will work for their benefit in the long run,” Villar, one of the law’s proponents, said in a statement.

But she maintained her belief that the programs for local rice farmers under the P10-billion Rice Competitiveness Enhance Fund “will address the perennial woes in the agriculture sector and will help our farmers and fisherfolk reduce their production cost and increase their productivity and income.”

Duterte, in an interview over ABS-CBN’s “Failon Ngayon” last Sunday said he is not keen on stopping the implementation of the Rice Tariffication Law as this would supposedly result to a food crisis. The President apologized to the local farmers for the dropping farm gate prices of palay due to the surge of in supply of cheap rice imports.
