The world body on Thursday called for global solidarity and support for Africa in COVID-19 response, sustainable development and financing.

UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed, who briefed the Security Council on cooperation between the United Nations and the African Union on behalf of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, said urgent action is needed in the three areas.

Second, there is a need to focus on sustainable development because, ultimately, sustainable and inclusive development is the best chance to address the root causes of conflict and achieve a future of peace and prosperity for everyone, she said. Urgent action is needed to speed up the re-channeling of Special Drawing Rights of the International Monetary Fund and increase the fiscal space, she said.
