“If that will protect our workers then we will support it,” TUCP vice president Louie Corral said in a press briefing in Manila, Wednesday.
“The problem with the DOLE that we had in the past was they were engaged in the marketing of our workers. They have been going around the world essentially marketing the capacity of our workers then they should also be exercising the same rigor in promoting the safety and welfare of our workers because you are not dealing with commodities, you are dealing with people’s lives,” he added.
“Like the new hires bound for Saudi Arabia, what will happen to them? Is there a program directive from POEA to look for alternative employers?” she asked. “We will take a hit here also in terms of remittances and the recruitment agencies will also suffer because of the loss of job orders,” Ople said.
On Tuesday, Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III revealed the plan to scale down the deployment of OFWs to Saudi next year citing the “slow action” of the Saudi government on the plight of workers there.
