ILOILO CITY — The Philippine Rural Electric Cooperatives Association Inc. (Philreca) has urged the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) to expedite the approval of provisional authority for electric cooperatives (ECs) to enter into emergency power supply agreements (EPSAs).

ILOILO CITY — The Philippine Rural Electric Cooperatives Association Inc. has urged the Energy Regulatory Commission to expedite the approval of provisional authority for electric cooperatives to enter into emergency power supply agreements .Philreca made the statement amid the increase in electricity bills due to the surge in generation costs at the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market .From P6.55 in February this year, electricity prices in the spot market soared to P12.02 in March and P15.

Lawyer Janeene Depay-Colingan, Philreca executive director, said cooperatives are bearing the brunt of the increase as 'these pass-on charges are not used by the ECs in their operations but are rather paid to their power suppliers.'Based on Philreca's available data, residential rates in Western Visayas for May this year saw a 16.57 percent increase, or around P2.1842 per kilowatt-hour, compared to the previous billing month.
