Lawmakers on Monday pointed to the need to develop Sangley Point in Cavite into an airport for general aviation and commercial flights to decongest the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).

ACT-CIS partylist Representative Eric Yap, chairman of the House Committee on Games and Amusement, said Sangley Point could serve as the third runway to reduce air traffic congestion at NAIA.

Bukidnon Rep. Manuel Zubiri agreed with Yap, saying the conversion of Sangley Point in Cavite into a large transportation hub was discussed in the 17th Congress. “We can still maximize the airport if we work and act on it right away. I implore this committee to equip and expand Sangley to augment the NAIA,” Zubiri added.

“The requirement for a taxiway for a jet aircraft is 106 meters. Currently, the existing right now is only 62. So it can’t operate — we call it 4C aircraft,” he told the panel.
