Senators continued to clash on their positions on the proposed revival of the death penalty in the country

The death penalty was the first of the priority measures mentioned by President Duterte in his fourth State of the Nation Address . He called on Congress to reinstate capital punishment for heinous crimes related to illegal drugs, as well as plunder.

While he is open to imposing capital punishment for heinous crimes, Sen. Joel Villanueva, a member of the Senate majority bloc, said he will still vote against the proposal. Aside from drug trafficking and plunder, Sen. Ramon “Bong” Revilla Jr. on Thursday said death penalty should also be imposed on those who falsely accuse people of committing plunder.
