OCCIDENTAL Mindoro lone district Rep. Josephine Sato appealed to the National Food Authority on Thursday to increase the buying support price for palay to increase the income of local farmers.Sato told The Manila Times that she hoped for an increase in the NFA’s buying price of palay, ranging from P15 to P19 per kilo in the province. She said a higher price had long been awaited by the farmers, especially at this critical time of the pandemic.

She added that doing so would also ensure food security and availability of the country’s chief staple. “We have relied on the rice importation these past years. However, the production of rice importers is also affected by this pandemic. Thus, we should rely on our own farmers like here in our province. They strive to fulfill the rice production needs of the province,” she noted.

Sato said there was a recent clamor for the province’s rice produce from the provinces of Cebu and Bicol with the intensified relief efforts amid the enhanced community quarantine. Occidental Mindoro is one of the major rice-producing provinces in the country and within the ranks of Nueva Ecija, Isabela, Tarlac and Cagayan province.
