NBI beefs up cybercrime division to act swiftly on cases, complaints

The National Bureau of Investigation has added 16 more agents to its Cyber Crime Division to cope with the increasing number of complaints and cases of cybercrimes filed with the bureau.

In a statement, the NBI said that Officer-in-Charge Eric B. Distor has signed a special order on the assignment of the 16 agents.It said that the new agents “will handle complaints filed by private citizens such as identity theft, online scam or fraud, hacking of bank accounts and personal accounts, phishing, cyber libel, forensic accounting and other violations that fall within the ambit of Cyber Crime Prevention Act of 2012.

“NBI OIC-Director Eric B. Distor said that with the additional Agents, it is expected that complaints lodge before the NBI will be acted upon more expeditiously,” it said. “Distor also expressed his support and confidence in the passion of the newly-assigned Agents,” it noted. “With the on-going procurement of modern equipment and gadgets aligned with the modernization program of the NBI, the augmentation of Agents to combat cyber criminals has become a necessity,” it stressed.
