From November 11 to January 10, malls in the metropolis will open at 11 a.m. instead of the usual 10 a.m. during weekdays, the Metropolitan Manila Development (MMDA) announced on Tuesday afternoon.

MMDA General Manager Jose Arturo Garcia said this was agreed upon during their meeting with Metro Manila mall operators.“Shopping mall operators said they will deploy additional security personnel to facilitate long lines of vehicles going inside mall parking areas which cause traffic gridlock,” he said.

“DPWH agreed for the temporary suspension of road reblockings along EDSA and C5, except government flagship projects and during emergency cases,” the MMDA general manager said. “Our studies showed that 1, 000 vehicles occupy the parking lots of malls, meaning they travel around 8 a.m., during rush hour. Even the figure is not that big, it helps mitigate traffic congestion during the holiday season,” she told the Manila Bulletin.

“There are around 410, 000 vehicles traveling Metro Manila every day. During ‘Ber’ months, about 82, 000 vehicles add to that figure,” the MMDA spokesperson said.
