“We are preparing contingency plans in case of a major eruption or if its restiveness prolongs. We also have recovery programs as well as rehabilitation programs for calamity survivors,” said Rev. Fr. Jayson Siapco of the Lipa Archdiocesan Social Action Commission over Church-run Radio Veritas.
Aside from Catholic churches, there are three other faith denominations that have opened their doors to evacuees, as well as some privately-owned resorts, Siapco said. “We need medicines, toiletries, sleeping mats, and blankets for our evacuees. It is not easy for the residents to stay in the evacuation centers. Many of them, particularly the children, have contracted cough, colds, and fever, that’s why we need the medicines,” he said.
Aside from relief efforts, Lipa’s social action arm is also conducting psycho-social intervention. “The archdiocese has deployed 120 psychological first aiders to attend to the evacuees. A holy mass is also held at the evacuation centers every day at 11 a.m.,” Siapco said.
