The “bayanihan” spirit that has been one of the Filipinos’ most endearing values, shone moments after the first phereatic eruption of Taal Volcano last Jan. 12, even before the ashfall had subsided.

The first signs of bayanihan literally became visible when residents along the highways took it upon themselves to help motorists caught in the middle of the ashfall to have better visibility. Standing on rooftops, benches or simply along the road, the residents – with garden hoses or pails – doused the windshields of vehicles, to wash off the thick ashfall.

Face masks – the most essential safety gear of the moment –were distributed especially at the evacuation centers, some of them coming from the local Rotary Club in Santo Tomas City. Along the streets, many concerned people had started handing out face masks—from surgical to more expensive N95—to anyone they saw.

At an evacuation site in Cutang Cawayan, Santa Teresita town, a group of four-by-four car enthusiasts held their own relief operation. At the Batangas Provincial Sports Complex, relief goods poured in for evacuees. Aside from the usual basic necessities, many generous donors who did not even leave their names, dropped by to bring pandesal, pizza, pancit, bottled water.
