Kudos all around, but…

BELOW, from Ted Laguatan in San Francisco, what I received on the feast of the Immaculate Conception. On Dec. 28, 2017, be it remembered, December 8 was declared a special nonworking holiday via a bill signed into law at that time by Prez Duterte, Republic Act 10966, proclaiming Her as our Principal Patroness — mirabile dictu! Ted emailed:

I also heard last Saturday from another San Francisco pal, lawyer Jojo Liangco, triggered by my piece a week ago.“[Y]our email mentioned the park that was dedicated to the memory of Ms. Victoria Manalo-Draves. The district where it is located in the South of Market area of San Francisco is now officially a `Filipino District’ by virtue of the vote from the Board of Supervisors of San Francisco.

Jojo was the source of my info on Vicky Manalo, whose father, Teofilo, hailed from Orani, Bataan; in 1948, in London, she won two diving golds in the Olympics, our next destination. “I had the opportunity to work with Tita Bulletx when we formed the Pilipino Bayanihan Resource Center in Daly City in 1989-1990, a non-profit institution helping newly arrived Filipinos [there]. They elected me as founding president and she was one of our founding board members. It was a shock hearing the news of her passing as we had met the night before that fateful day and she was so excited telling us that she was meeting a friend the next day.

Stormy bully tactics the Prez appears to have used to scare the water concessionaires with economic sabotage threats for a deal worked out in 1997. They quickly folded. But, the world values predictability. Changing the rules in the middle of play may just present its own set of problems, particularly if foreign financing institutions and arbiters are involved. Hard-nosed bargaining, following complete staff work, should be at the initial stage.
