President Rodrigo Duterte will exercise his veto power to remove any unconstitutional provision in the proposed P4.1-trillion national budget for 2020, Malacañang assured the public on Thursday.

Palace spokesman Salvador Panelo made the statement after Sen. Panfilo Lacson claimed that last minute insertions were made in the 2020 budget that was ratified on Wednesday.

“I hope the President will again exercise his political will in vetoing line items that will obviously waste people’s tax money,” Lacson said. In a text message, Panelo said Duterte would not hesitate to use his veto powers as he did when he vetoed the 2019 national budget. Early this year, Duterte removed P95.37 billion worth of public works appropriations from the original P3.757-trillion 2019 spending plan.
