Defining the News

TIME TO PLAY. Palestinian children who have fled their homes due to Israeli airstrikes play with the help of games organized by humanitarian workers as they shelter at a United Nations-run school in Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip on Monday, amid the ongoing battles between Israel and the Palestinian group Hamas. AFPIsrael’s defense minister said Sunday that the war against Hamas could take “months” but insisted it would be the last against the Gaza militant group.

Israel, which has repeatedly vowed to eradicate Hamas from Gaza, says its air raids target Hamas commanders and infrastructure. The United Nations estimates Gaza needs about 100 trucks a day to meet the needs of its 2.4 million residents, almost half of whom are believed to have been displaced by Israel’s bombing campaign.

Hamas militants stormed into Israel from the Gaza Strip on Oct. 7, and killed at least 1,400 people, mostly civilians who were shot, mutilated, or burnt to death on the first day of the raid, Israeli officials said. Around the world, Israel’s friends and foes alike warned against the war in Gaza spilling over into a full-scale regional conflagration.
