BACOLOD -- Sugar industry stakeholders on Sunday opposed the proposed sugar import liberalization and said they would seek an audience with President Rodrigo Duterte.

The Sugar Regulatory Administration earlier said it was looking at an importation program to address the rising prices of raw and refined sugar following the drop in production this year.

Confederation of Sugar Producers Association Inc. spokesperson Raymond Montinola challenged SRA administrator Hermie Serafica to be involved with the issue. "Since you are the SRA administrator, you should be the leader of the industry, so why are you just washing your hands? Why are you just simply giving the DA the pros and cons which they say they will still study?" Montinola said.

Wennie Sancho, convenor of Save the Sugar Industry Movement, said allowing more sugar imports to the Philippines would "not solve the problem of competitiveness." -- Report from Marty Go, ABS-CBN News
