The Gilas Pilipinas women’s team overcame top seed China, 14-11, in the bronze medal match of the 2019 FIBA 3×3 U-18 Asia Cup in Cyberjaya, Malaysia on Saturday.
From left: Camille Clarin, Kristine Cayabyab, Angel Surada, and Ella Fajardo. Cayabyab and Surada had 10 of PH’s total output. Tied at 11-all with 55 seconds left, Kristine Cayabyab went straight to the basket to break the impasse. The Philippines then forced a jumpball between Camille Clarine and China’s Xianglin Wu.
Angel Surada was fouled after the toss and went to the line with 25.6 seconds remaining, making both free throws.This is the first podium finish of the national team in the history of the youth continental competition in the girls’ division.Earlier, the national team outlasted New Zealand, 11-9 to advance to the semifinals but later fell to the bigger and more physical Australia in the battle for the silver.
